If a company manages to gather up the smartest scientists on the planet and pull together the world’s knowledge, then what it does with that power is try to maximize power and shareholder wealth, it has failed on some profound level no matter its technical prowess.
The world has great problems of inequality and great suffering that lead us to war. These wars erase the short term gains we make in profits and create insecurity for all.
Our future needs not just open standards and open knowledge. We need to set aside a portion of that Internet landscape to serve as an engine to lift up those in poverty and counterbalance the accumulation of power.
